Jack Elliott – “Thank God For Rednecks, Cowboys, Freedom Lovin’ People And The NRA” 7″ (1983)

I’ve decided that this year I’m really going to start getting more aggressive with my record collecting, as I have a little more money to devote to it and I miss the traveling. And it’s not like these things are getting any easier to find. I’ve also decided to start actively focusing more on these kinds of records and begin doling them out on the blog more often. As you may have already gleaned, I rather fancy these things and if you don’t share my enthusiasm for this crap, you can kiss my lily-white dupa.
When I first found this puppy, I figured it was going to be some lame-ass comedy record or parody. Nope. It appears old Jack is dead serious and his delivery on this baby is almost pure perfection, sounding like he hasn’t taken a shit in a month and like he’s about ready to punch one of those “righteous people” repeatedly in the face. Hard! This thing is so over the top I can’t even continue describing it—he steals my thunder! The flip is decent schlock, as well, although in somewhat rough shape.

The Rhinehart Brothers – “We Belong To The Ku Klux Klan b/w The Klansman’s Friend” 10″ 78rpm (192?, 193?)

Yeah, I know I’m setting a new low by posting this one, but I’ll be setting it lower soon enough. Just give me time. Also, I have to say that the only thing more satisfying than picking up a ridiculously rare slab like this for $10 is knowledge that I still command the magnetism to attract total strangers to offer it to me! As for the record, I think it speaks for itself and, while I don’t find the racist nature of it to be particularly surprising, I find the nature of the music itself somewhat perplexing. What the hell did people do with this stuff? It isn’t bluegrass, country or even danceable for that matter. I suppose all you could do was kind of sit there and tap your foot to it. Yeah, this baby is a real foot-tapper—better watch your ass! So have at it, shmoes, but before you get your panties in a bundle, take note of 0:56 on “A Klansman’s Friend”, where we are assured that they are, in fact, “a jolly good bunch”—and why would he lie? And, no doubt, those “big parades” were the bee’s knees. Yes, quite a spiffy affair, indeed. And, yeah, I know this is one of those rips that will be floating around the internet for all eternity. Oh, well. And surely, the remaining 150 members of this organization will be stoked that someone is playing their songs again! I’ve also included some similar tracks with the download that were given to me on a bootleg cassette many years ago. Two of the tracks appear to be by these same clowns and all the tracks sound even shittier than the tracks below. Take it or leave it. I included a scan of an old KKK songbook from the Poopy archives, as well.
As a slightly geeky aside, getting a halfway decent-sounding rip of this was a real pain in the ass. Anyone else out there ever try messing with these old 78’s? Even if you invested in one of those special 78rpm cartridges, you’d think all a modern system would do is pull the high end off it.

Permission Denied?

Anyone else out there running into this stuff from MediaFire? One of my readers brought this to my attention and then I started running across it on other sites. Here we go again. It would be one thing if they were actually showing concern for the artists, but instead they are just trying to rope you into giving money to Amazon or iTunes. Nevah! You think White Flag is getting money from Amazon for their out of print CD? And they don’t offer the LP for download, either. If you run into this crap on my site, leave a note in the comments and I’ll try to fix it.
John Henry – “Footprint Of The American Chicken” 7″ (1972)

Not sure if this guy invented the slogan “Footprint Of The American Chicken”, but I’m never one to frown on some good ole-fashioned hippie bashing. This record is OK, but doesn’t quite bite into the jugular enough for my liking. The flip is a rant about Lafayette, Indiana, that was something of a regional hit, but annoys the hell out of me. Apparently, this guy used to do the club circuit between Indianapolis and Chicago and I even have an autographed full length laying around somewhere that isn’t any big shakes that I can recall—kind of a Jeff Foxworthy prototype if memory serves.

Sam Bogart – “You Bet I’m A Flag Waver” 7″ (196?, 197?)

Still more Americana from my bottomless pit of this nonsense. The A-Side is an over the top patriotic tirade in the vein of Johnny Sea. The flip is something of an oddity, as it features a talking flag and not just any talking flag, but a sad talking flag. Why is the talking flag so sad, you ask? Because stupid hippies won’t take their hats off when it passes by and invertebrate commie scum set it on fire. What’s up with that?

J.C. Mahoney – “Has Anybody Seen America” 7″ (1976)

Well it’s that time of year again, isn’t it? Yep, this blog has been around for three years, which is about two and a half years longer than I intended and also let me tell you, things were a fuckin’ hell of a lot better for me three years ago! Nothin’ beats the feeling of sliding around on a slippery slope and the sinking feeling that things are only going to get worse and by “things” I mean the state of this country—not Mr. Poopy. Mr. Poopy always comes out on top in the end. At least so far I have. We’ll just have to see, now won’t we? So anyway, ‘tis the season for patriotism, so I will now subject you so some glorious Americana. We’ll make it quick and it won’t hurt a bit. I promise.
So we’ll start the ball rolling with this piece of 70’s cheese that comes off like a cross between Don McLean and the criminally under-downloaded Johnny Flag. This song uses the somewhat odd analogy of comparing the loss of America with some woman abandoning her family and it sort of works. At any rate, it might interest Mr. Mahoney to know that she’s back now and she’s filed the papers and is taking the house, the car and alimony payments look like they’re going to be a bitch. Only one song on this thing and it’s on both sides.

Charlie Stewart – “G.I. Joe / Kangaroo Court” 7″ (196?)

Oh, hell, yeah. If I could find a slab like this every day for the rest of my life, I’d die a happy man. Some scorching old school country and western here and both sides are great and, unbelievably, this disc appears to be pretty much unknown. Yes, Mr. Stewart isn’t shy about telling you that he has shrapnel in both legs and God help you if you are a draft-card burning commie! Flip it over and you have an anti-corruption tirade directed at a judge on the take. Good stuff and perhaps I’ll subject you to more of this guy’s works in the future—he had a few others.

John Steinbacher – “1973″ 7″ EP (196?, 197?)

It’s no big secret that I have a ton of records like this and from to time I’ll play one of them and marvel at how much of the predictions came true. Well this record isn’t one of them! Basically, this fruitcake is asserting that the Blacks and Commies will be taking over America in 1973 and details how it is going to happen. Mr. Steinbacher spouts the same old line that these many of those guys preached and it might hold a little bit of water if he hadn’t tied an exact date to it. Never give an exact date!!! Strangely, the Jews got left out of the conspiracy, but maybe that was supposed to happen in 1974.

Bob Hafner And The Homesteaders – “The Day George Wallace Was Shot / Brave Men Walk Alone” (1972)

Yet another George Wallace record. Apparently, there were a ton of these things and clearly Mr. Hafner was a fan of early Buck Owens. Well, clear to me, at least. The rest of you clowns need to buy a Buck Owens record. Actually, the flip is the winner on this one, although both sides have that cheesy, amateurish charm that makes this stuff fun. Oh, and I love how some clown decided to give a history lesson on the label of side 2. Thanks, buddy. You increased the collectors value of this thing a thousand fold, jerkwad.

Son Of Mississippi – “Flight NAACP 105 / The Voice Of Alabama” (196?)

And we’ll finish off this series with another record from the notorious Reb Rebel label. I’ve found a few copies of this one, with a variety of covers and different flipsides. I’ve also heard a different version of “Flight NAACP 105”, but I only have a bootleg copy of it. Anyway, as I have been lead to believe, this was a fairly popular comedy recording down South back in the day and many of these records were pressed. As I realize most of you mouse-clickers have no attention spans to speak of, I’ll detail what the skit is about. What we have is a couple drunk Amos and Andy rejects trying to fly a plane, one of whom sharing the last name of a certain activist who was causing a fuss at the time. The plane is getting low on gas, so they call the control tower to find a place to land, where some redneck dude steers them into the side of a mountain. Now, I believe I’ve stated elsewhere that some comedy doesn’t stand the test of time, right? And who was Amos and Andy you ask? Just forget it. The flip is another political statement like the Happy Fats stuff I posted last year.

I’ve Got Those Demo-Lition Blues – V/A LP (1983)

While I’ve known several people who managed completely by-pass the phase, I tend to think it wasn’t too unusual for most US Punk kids in the 80’s to go through a UK82 / British Punk phase at some point in their youths—usually during the late teens or early 20’s and, amazingly, I still see kids today dressing up like bands from that era. Whatever. Personally, I went through a period of several years where I couldn’t stand the sound of this stuff, but a few years back I had a change of heart and started liking these bands again. Let’s see: a disintegrating empire, no jobs, no future, and no signs of things getting any better? I think it has finally sunk into my Yankee brain-I get it now, and the stuff these kids were ranting about back then holds some new significance to me. Aside from that, I totally would have eaten this record up as a kid—I loved this stuff and, while this seems to have come out around the tail end of the first wave, it is decent Punk schlock for the not-too-picky listener of music from this era. This comp seems to be a little less known than some of its contemporaries and therein lies the charm, as these songs haven’t been totally beaten into the ground like some of the better known records from this classic period. This is pretty much low-fi, working class, political Punk slop that doesn’t sound like Discharge or GBH—more like Chaos UK and Exploited. A fun listen if you haven’t heard this sort of stuff in a while.

Back In Business!

All the old posts have now been switched over to MediaFire and the site is, once again, fully functional. Let’s see how long this lasts, shall we? I have to admit my confidence in MediaFire could be a little higher, but I’ll give them a chance. And am I the only one who has trouble with their multi-uploader? It rarely works and you have to upload one file at a time, hovering over the site until it goes through. To compound the problem, the nearest high speed internet connection I have is a gas station on the edge of the nearest town with minimal heat and stinks of fried pork tenderloin and potato wedges. So here I am, stinking of pork tenderloins and potato wedges, and what the hell have you clowns done for me? Nuthin’!
Oh, and I did some long-overdue site maintenance while I was waiting and stinking. Basically, I added some new categories to aid in site navigation. Now, you can get all the Mentors and El Duce posts at the click of a mouse and I did the same with a couple other bands and genres. I have also received a couple requests in the past to put together a list of some of the top retard and fake Punk releases. Well, I’m not sure if I can really comply with such a request but, as far as this site goes, I added the categories of Poopy Punk and Poopy Rock that, while containing some legitimate releases, tends to gravitate more towards the bands and artists who went the extra mile in general dumbassitude and crapola. Not that most of this stuff isn’t stupid, mind you! I have some new posts in the works and should have them up by then end of the week.
Robert Connelly – “The Complacent Americans” 7″ (1961)

This guy just needs to chill. I mean, how bad can getting blown up by a nuclear missile be? I do, however, find it interesting that this whole dialogue is rattled off after he was killed in the blast—perhaps that’s one of the side effects of radiation the government doesn’t want to tell us about? The flipside isn’t nearly as fun, offering some Cold War-era advice on how to prepare for a nuclear assault. You can hear it on the download.

Al Alberts – ” I Am A Sick American” 7″ (197?)

Well, now that we have the obligatory obscure Punk records out of the way, let us now continue to celebrate my two year anniversary by assaulting your eardrums a few records I have been sitting on for a while, by which I mean a batch of nationalist, right wing, and racist nonsense! And I suppose a couple of these records kind of tie into the 4th of July and the general spirit of the times. First off, we have Al Alberts. Al has a problem: he is a sick American. What can we do to make things better for you, Al? Well, even I have to admit this guy sounds like a total dick—he should try a little love. Oh, wait! He does that on the B Side!

Chuck Atha / Frank W. Morris – “Wallace to Washington ’72″ 7″ (197?)

Wow, I guess there must have been something going around in the early 70’s, because it looks like Frank W. Morris caught the same thing Al Alberts had. Yep, Frank is a sick American, too, but not sick enough to make the A Side of this record—that honor was given to Chuck Atha and his ode to presidential candidate George Wallace. Pretty weak stuff, too. You mean you can’t find a better song to rip off than the “Ballad Of Davy Crockett”? No, Mr. Morris does a much better job in my opinion, and he has different lyrics than the Al Alberts tirade.

Happy Fats – “Veteran’s Plea / Dear Mr. President” 7″ (196?)

The name Happy Fats and the notorious (Reb)Rebel Records should be familiar to some of you readers. Rest assured, I have a small stash of these gems, including more from Happy Fats, so stay tuned! This one features Mr. Fats crooning away as a WWII vet, offering assistance to his son over in Vietnam. A touching ditty to be sure, but not nearly as hilarious as the anti-integration tirade on the B-Side! What kills me about these old “segregationist” country records is the way they manage to inject poisonous venom into such sweet-sounding, bouncy music. A lost art, to be sure!

The Lying Governor – S/T 7″ (1985)

This guy is from Illinois? No fuckin’ way! They have what now? One former governor in prison and another on the way? Give me a break! But it’s all business as usual for that place, begging the question of who the real idiots are: the criminals or the fools who refuse to demand better? For some reason the B Side has nothing to do with politics—just a country song.

“C” Company – “Wake Up America” LP (1971)

So you thought we were done with these guys after I posted the 7” a while back? Oh, hell, no! They released an entire LP! Like the 7”, the LP takes a pro Vietnam War stance on some of the songs and, for some reason, some pro Confederate Army songs, as well. Better late than never, I guess. Actually, I think we might have a minor classic with “War Baby”, a tune that decries the misfortune of kids being born with their fathers on the front lines and growing up in a time of conflict, only to end up dutifully marching away to get their heads shot off in another conflict when they grow up! Are you ready to go, War Baby? I’ll admit, this LP took a little while to grow on me, but it certainly has its charm and, like I’ve stated on other occasions, they don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

Lance Lindsey – “Wake Up America / How Do You Tell A Small Boy” 7″ (1973)

“Another one of these shit records”, you say?!? Where does it end? It ends here. For now! Another “Wake Up America” record here, but this guy is part of the bring home the P.O.W.’s crowd. Well, I have little doubt that our honest government tosses away its human equipment the same way it trashes all the other expensive weapons we get to pay for in these never-ending conflicts. And what would the public do if it were officially disclosed we sold out those 400 or so kids in Korea? Probably suck their thumbs like they always do. It ain’t your problem, right?
