Anyone else out there running into this stuff from MediaFire?  One of my readers brought this to my attention and then I started running across it on other sites.  Here we go again.  It would be one thing if they were actually showing concern for the artists, but instead they are just trying to rope you into giving money to Amazon or iTunes.  Nevah!  You think White Flag is getting money from Amazon for their out of print CD? And they don’t offer the LP for download, either.  If you run into this crap on my site, leave a note in the comments and I’ll try to fix it.

Poopy Endorsement: The Torpedos – “Fruition” DVD-r (2012)

Not that I wasn’t already planning on doing the blog thang today, but imagine my surprise when I walked out to get the mail and found this in my box.  Talk about your perfect timing!  Anyway, while I usually do the endorsements on the tale end, I’ll bump this one to the top, seeing as they were kind enough to float me some free shit and this thing is already rare as hen’s teeth and more or less doomed to total obscurity once they run out of copies.  All you old Chicago sausage-heads from those days will most likely get a kick out of it.

So what we have here is what I would guess to be the final release by the long-defunct Chicago punk band, The Torpedos, in the form of a DVD-r with two live shows from 1981 and 1985 and a lengthy slide show of old stills from the good-old-days, that should be of interest to aging fans from the era, showing good-quality pics of the old clubs and the folks that frequented them.  Pretty fun stuff that is worth a look, even if you weren’t a part of it.  The video footage is about what you’d expect from what the average Punker had at his disposal back in those days, by which I mean VHS home video quality.  The 1981 show is pretty rough and is probably best viewed on a smaller screen to enhance clarity.  Looks like there may have been rendering issues, but it is what it is—you’re not going to find it anywhere else.  The 1985 show is in much better shape, shot with a more modern camera, and they run through all the stuff from the two LPs and then some.  There is also some still footage of Certain Death and Slammin’ Watusis thrown in for good measure, with one song each and some more old footage that probably hasn’t seen the light of day in a decade or two.

Not sure what the deal is with the shirts, but they exist (see below).  The DVDs are $10. Here’s the contact info…………

You can write ‘em at:

Dr. Sadistic And The Silverking Crybabies – “Pyramid Punk” LP (1980)

Looks like we’re overdue for some posts again.  Sorry, guys, but I’m busy—not that I owe you clowns anything.  No, I don’t owe you a damn thing and, in fact, this particular record is a donation of sorts, recently given to me by an old friend.  I first heard this thing about 7 or 8 years ago and was so impressed with it, that I felt compelled to fetch it out of the pile and beg for it.  And, of course, it’s for a worthy cause, right?  So why would I go through so much trouble?  Because it’s a great record that needs to be shared with the world?  Don’t be silly!  And check your URL while you’re at it and recognize that, yes, you are here and, no, you should know better than that by now.  In fact I would dare to say that this is one of the most heinous, crap fake Punk records I have ever heard in my life and, like the cover says, it is of “no redeeming social value”.  Unfortunately, it is of no musical value, either.   The back cover also makes the claim that this is a “concept album” and I have to agree that, if the concept is making an LP of unlistenable Disco-influenced crapola, it succeeds with flying colors!  And that’s enough of that, but let me finish my flame by adding that, if you managed to tolerate some of the other bad Punk records I’ve churned up, this baby just might be the one to put you on the ropes!

So, with the necessary (and deserved) bashing out of the way, let me try to halfway defend this thing a little bit.  First off, they were from Aspen, Colorado.  Never been there, but I can only imagine that being a working stiff in a town like that would have to royally suck, so I can offer some degree of sympathy and possibly a little leeway, but this record came out in 1980.  Secondly, I have to admit the lyrics are pretty good, actually above average and pretty funny but, man, is this thing ever a tough listen!  But to each his own, right?  Obviously, some dude who smoked a lot of cigarettes liked the thing, because the B-Side is thrashed and it smells like an ashtray.  I should also mention that, if it were between listening to this thing or The Spooks, I’d pick this baby, hands down!

Mutants – “Boss Man / Back Yard Boys” 7″ (1977)

I have to admit this is kind of a lame post, seeing as this is a bootleg and all, but last I checked this disc wasn’t exactly a household name and, until that happens, not enough attention can be given to this masterpiece.  Actually, I ran across it while I was trying to find those two lame records I posted above and I just can’t resist putting it up since it’s so damn good!  For some reason the picture on the back cover wound up on the front of that “Live To Ride” comp, but were these guys really Metal?  They sort of look it, but this sounds pretty Punk to me.  If fact, it’s Poopy Punk, and it simply doesn’t get any more righteous than “Boss Man”, a killer track to be sure, to which we can all relate—unfortunately.  The flip is great stuff, as well.

So just get a look at these Punk freaks, will you?  You know, I really get tired of saying things like “they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore” but, damn, they sure don’t!  What the hell happened?  As undoubtedly at least a couple of the guys from this outfit are still among the living somewhere, maybe we can clone their DNA in the hopes of maybe hearing some decent music again in another 18 or 20 years.  I just can’t see the current crop of sissies breeding anything but more of the same!

Back In Business!

All the old posts have now been switched over to MediaFire and the site is, once again, fully functional.  Let’s see how long this lasts, shall we?  I have to admit my confidence in MediaFire could be a little higher, but I’ll give them a chance.  And am I the only one who has trouble with their multi-uploader?  It rarely works and you have to upload one file at a time, hovering over the site until it goes through.  To compound the problem, the nearest high speed internet connection I have is a gas station on the edge of the nearest town with minimal heat and stinks of fried pork tenderloin and potato wedges.  So here I am, stinking of pork tenderloins and potato wedges, and what the hell have you clowns done for me?  Nuthin’!

Oh, and I did some long-overdue site maintenance while I was waiting and stinking.  Basically, I added some new categories to aid in site navigation.  Now, you can get all the Mentors and El Duce posts at the click of a mouse and I did the same with a couple other bands and genres.  I have also received a couple requests in the past to put together a list of some of the top retard and fake Punk releases.  Well, I’m not sure if I can really comply with such a request but, as far as this site goes, I added the categories of Poopy Punk and Poopy Rock that, while containing some legitimate releases, tends to gravitate more towards the bands and artists who went the extra mile in general dumbassitude and crapola.  Not that most of this stuff isn’t stupid, mind you!  I have some new posts in the works and should have them up by then end of the week.

Bloody Mess & The Scabs – “6th Grade Field Trip” LP (1990)

OK, I lied and I’m done with the crapola records for now.  Here’s one good record I keep meaning to give a shout out to, as I feel it never quite got the credit it deserved.  As most of us remember, this band was affiliated with GG Allin and, as a result, I think a lot of people wrote them off as GG clones or hangers-on.  Well, that may or may not be true, as I can’t say as I’m all that intimate with what transpired in that scene.  I will attest, however, that their live shows blew most bands out of the water and, musically speaking, this record is about as gritty as it gets, with a crude but catchy US Punk sound that was nothing like the GG Allin material.  Lyrically, there is no comparison to Mr. Allin, either, and I have to say Mr. Mess really shines on a few of these songs, with the type of blunt, honest tirades and commentary that any true Punker can relate to.  “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Mammogram Days”, and “Quicksand” are some of the standouts but, as a whole, the record comes off as very honest, delivered with a Sam Kinison howl!  Really good Punk rock schlock all the way around on this one and I suspect that if he hadn’t been involved with GG, more people would be putting this LP on a pedestal.  The second LP contains several good songs, as well, and is worth a listen.

Discords – “Spank It!” CD (1999)

So now that I’ve done my duty of posting a few records for the US Punk historians out there, let’s get down to the real meat and potatoes of this blog, shall we?  Get a look at the band pics below.  Now, take another look and reflect that this is how ALL musicians should look, PERIOD!  So why do a lot of those skinhead bands like to put those cutesy little Viking and Bootboy cartoons on the covers of their records?  I have no I idea, but it looks fucking stupid.  It also does a great disservice to this masterpiece because, at first glance, I would be inclined to think it was one of those beer-swillin’ skinhead records, while this is actually some top-knotch old-school Punk / Goon rock, put out by an old Montreal, Quebec Punk outfit whose only other release came out in 1982.  There are some really great songs on this thing and, I ain’t gonna lie, the title track has been stuck in my head for weeks!!  While the CD appears to have been recorded in 1999, it doesn’t sound it and has that sweet, old-school juvenile delinquent smart-assery and nastiness from theirs and my own generation that has been lacking from other goon bands ever since—probably because they wrote a lot of the songs when they were kids.  Some really fun stuff here and this baby will be sitting at the top of the Poopy charts for months to come.

Strangely enough, the obscure reference to the Notre Dame de Grace neighborhood is not totally lost on me.  I lived up the street from it, in a run-down duplex on Avenue Marcil back in the mid 1970’s and have some childhood memories of that part of town.  I recall an old part of an old city and they always seemed to be tearing up the streets for busted water mains.  My place was actually quite spacious and pretty cool, but was in bad shape and literally smelled like shit when it got hot out.  Honestly, compared to some of the other dives I’ve been stuck in, that city was The Ritz!  Heck, at this point just about anything up in Hoserville looks nice compared to the shithole the States has become!

Oh, yeah, I should also add that dickheads are already selling this out-of-print CD for $50 and up.  Fuck that and track down a cheap copy while you can—there aren’t many left.  I included their 1982 EP with the download, as well, and suffice to say, it rips!

Neighborhood Watch – “Feeding The Hand That Bites” 12″ EP (1987)

Well, I should warn you right off the bat that if, for whatever reason, you got roped into getting a “real job”, the song “Sucking Corporate Ass” will haunt you the rest of your days.  Think I’m kidding?  Click the link and suffer, sucka!  Yes, there were some witty folks behind this piece of Punk slop and I’m surprised more collector swine aren’t shooting their wads for this one, just like I feel for that first Torpedos LP. And, no, I didn’t screw up the rip—the guitar actually sounds that sick, like they strung together a bunch of cheap distortion pedals and then played it through a home stereo at top volume.  Lyrically, it appears these guys had a political axe to grind, but they seem more routed in the revolution of daily life than the leftist preaching that probably turned away more people than converted, serving up some basic anti-establishment, non-conformist tirades that should appeal to youth of all ages and political persuasions.  Fun stuff.

Oh, yes, and note the absence of Crapidshare from the download links.  I swear, if you’d asked me five years ago who the best file sharing server was, I would have argued Rapidshare until I was blue in the face.  Well, not no more.  Nice to see the Swiss are as adept at mismanaging and running companies into the ground as the US.

U-Boats – “Street Tough” LP (1984)

One of my readers turned me on to this one and I can honestly say I don’t know how I lived without this thing.  So what do we have?  Well, musically it sounds like early 80’s Metal, mixed with mid-paced Punk. The lead singer sounds like he swallowed a handful of Valium and washed it down with a six pack of tall boys, and the lyrics are retarded, juvenile nonsense.  And my rating?  Ten stars out of ten, with five gold stars and a couple of smiley faces!  I live for this kind of moustache-laden, digital watch-wearing junk!   Apparently, they put out a 7” or two of “better”, faster, more HC-sounding records but I haven’t heard them, as I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to improve on perfection.

Bodies In Panic – “This Ain’t Rock N’ Roll (Then What The Hell Is It?) LP (1984?)

A few quick posts to keep the ball rolling.  I really don’t have too much to say about this disk, other than that they were label mates with Adrenalin OD and this was one of their early releases.  Oh, yes, and this thing is retardo, goofball Punk on a par with Maggot Sandwich or Chem Dyne.   Good lyrics on this one and I scanned the lyric sheet for your reading enjoyment.

White Pride – “Your Loss Is Our Gain” Demo (1983), “Peace My Ass” EP (1989)

If, by chance, you were one of those people who bought one of the bootlegs of these tunes, now’s your chance to check out your sound quality, as I got this from a guy who had some involvement with one of the original members, taken from the originals.  For those not familiar with this outfit, White Pride was a “joke” band from St. Louis, MO, but not too many people were laughing for some strange reason.   Well, you have to figure where there’s smoke, there’s fire as far as “jokes” like this go and, as a rule of thumb, if you’re going to tackle a touchy subject like race relations, one might want to employ something along the lines of tact and wit in the execution of such a project and there are probably guys walking around with Tourette Syndrome with more of both.  That said, I’m a big fan of bands who attempt this sort of thing and, whether you call it “being an asshole for asshole’s sake” or, as I like to call it, “the musical equivalent of taking a shit”, you have to admit that, while most recordings that attempt offensiveness wind up sounding like “poo-poo-kaka-doo-doo” after a few years, this thing still sounds surprisingly fresh and almost as nasty as the day it came out.   And let’s not discount the power of “fakeness” in getting a point across because, later, when you decide to grow up and maybe change your mind and walk away, no one can accuse you of “selling out” when nothing was ever for sale in the first place.  At the very least, even if you hate this thing, you should give them credit for covering all the bases—they pretty much hated everybody!

Maggot Sandwich – “Get Off The Stage” LP (1987)

A belated follow-up to the EP I posted earlier, here is the sole (to the best of my knowledge) LP by these musical geniuses.  Pretty sure I’ve seen this posted elsewhere, but here it is again, ‘cuz it’s just that darn good.   Another record from that not-too-terribly-interesting year of 1987 and, while it seemed like everyone else was growing their hair out and playing “crossover”, these dudes were cranking out traditional Class of ’77-ish Punk in right, proper fashion with fun lyrics.  And study well the image of the bass player in the photo below as this is, in fact, what all bass players need to look like, no matter what style of music they are playing, with that precise stance and especially the same look on their faces!

Anyone know if this band did anything else after this?  I sort of remember seeing some ads back in the early 90’s………

Our Neighbors Suck – Demo (1984)

So here is the much-anticipated posting of the 1984 demo by Our Neighbors Suck and, as promised, it is, indeed, about 1000 times better than the LP I posted over a year ago.  It might as well be a completely different band and what we have here is some classic old school US Punk,  with dirty, crude (but adequate) four-track sound and  some thoughtful, somewhat personal stream-of-thought  lyrics that work pretty good with these kind of tunes.  So let’s all give a round of applause to the drummer, Mando, for digging this out and sharing it with the world, as there is basically no way in hell these lost slices of US Punk History are going to be showing up on eBay or in the used bin any time soon.  Here is the track listing in Mando’s own words:

1.Hemlock – Paige’s home town in New York
2.New Race – Our Roots… Love That Song!!! Had To Cover It!!
3.The Rut – Everyone can relate more so today…
4.Ode To Roger!!! – Roger Helm was a rich skater that used to come by the band house. All we knew was his “STEP” parents spoiled him rotten by buying him a ramp in the days when they were a MILLION dollars (ours was made of stolen campaign signs). Couldn’t skate but always brought beer and girls. So we let him hang…. One day turn on the t.v. and here’s our boy’s mugshot on prime time news. Turns out he had dropped some acid went home and murdered his whole family… WOW!!! Blew our minds!!!
Wrote a little ditty about it, here it goes…
5.Free Souls
6.Pain And Sorrow
7.F.B.I. – Can’t go wrong with G Men… That was our hit!!
8.Kute De Knue/We Could Never Be Free
9.Girls!!! Girls!!! Girls!!! – Way before Motley Crue (HaHa).. Actualy played on the legendary “Rodney On The Rock” show…
10.Our Neighbors Suck- Band house, backyard ramp,  24 hour sessions,  endless parties, tested our neighbors to the limits…. Cops were called, you know the rest… DAMN KIDS!!!
11. Can’t Explain – 15 years old paying homage my hero and OG of punk rock drumming Keith Moon… What Cajones!!!
12.My Turn To Cry – Anti suicide song
13.Take Control Of Your Actions – Love the lyrics to this song!!! Great vocal performance as well!!! Paige at his best!!!

I have half a mind to repeat some of the hilarious comments he made regarding the history of this Phoenix, AZ band, but I’ll refrain, on the off chance that one of the other dudes should come along but, suffice to say, it is a tale of youthful ignorance, dope, booze, egos, and foggy logic—not unlike 90% of the garage bands that have ever existed in the history of the universe.  You can post your questions to Mando in the comments section.  So am I gonna retract my snarky comments about the LP?  Nah, although I do like it a lot better, knowing the story behind it.  However, I am more than willing to help in setting the record straight about this misguided outfit, by posting WAV files of these tunes to ensure their legacy the way it deserves to be remembered.  I also scanned the band photos and flyers in high resolution for download and included scans at standard resolution with the regular mp3 download.  Some quality old-school US Punk here and, for the last time, THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON MYSTIC!

Victimz of Society – “Wicked Rock Music Is Killing Our Children” LP (1986)

Slackin’ again.  Three weeks without a post and I even missed the one-year anniversary of this blog.  I originally intended to rush through this thing in a few months when I was unemployed, but it didn’t work out that way.  We’ll see how it goes, but I’m a busy guy.  Speaking of which, I wasn’t too busy to give some guys who I assume are approximately my own age or older some shit over at another blog.  I mean honestly, how many 40+ year-old guys have time to be reading 576 page re-issues of old fanzines, written by a bunch of kids?  Not that I’m bashing the kids, mind you, as they might actually find the thing interesting.  And how many useless books need to be written about Punk Rock?  It just ain’t that fuckin’ interesting after it has been beaten to death 1000 times.  You people kill me, but everyone has different priorities, I suppose, however, rather than having me lecture on how us grownups ought to be spending our time, let me suggest that, instead of trying to make me look like an idiot, you try rubbing it in my face how you manage to have so much free time on your hands—I’m inspired by stories about how people became independently wealthy or managed to beat the System.

But it’s not like I don’t love the kiddie stuff.  Hell, no! I live for dumbass, juvenile, Punk Rock idiocy—like this ridiculous piece-o-crap.   Thing is, I can rip this to my iPod and play it in my car instead of hovering over a turntable spinning the thing.  And, trust me, the “scene” isn’t dead—it just sucks.  Everything dies and if your best memories are of shit you did when you were 20, you’re doing something wrong, buddy.  And if there is ever a time when the world stops churning out smartass teenagers who start stupid bands, just let me know and I’ll just step right up to help fill the void—I’m pretty sure I can still hack it.  As for this record, what we have here is some above-average Class of 1983 hardcore with vocals that sound like they were recorded at the wrong speed in parts—and maybe they were!  Lyrically, these guys more than adequately meet my lofty standards and I ripped the little booklet that came with it, as well, to share their genius.  They appear to have been from Shitcago.

New York Dolls – “Bad Girl / Subway Train” 7″ (1972)

Funny how, after you’ve owned a record for a few decades, it becomes invisible, even when you are looking right at it.  I don’t know why I forgot about this one, but it is certainly essential listening and you should be downloading this right now instead of reading.  Two tracks from the 1973 LP, recorded with no frills and released in 1972, with a sloppier, more raw sound.  Do you need any further endorsement?

Bizarros / Rubber City Rebels – “From Akron” LP (1977)

This is one of those early US Punk releases that never seems to get its due for some reason.  Both bands on this split were kicking around the “scene” prior to the Punk “explosion” in 1977 and I tend think their songs would have “happened” whether Punk had given them a launching pad or not.  Undoubtedly, this record would be a household name if they had cranked it out a year or two earlier.  The Bizarros sound like a cross between Television and The Velvet Underground—but I like them anyway!  Ha!  Not a big fan of The Velvet Underground folks and, unlike most people who followed this band, I like the LP they put out on Mercury the best because it sounds the LEAST like VU.  Rubber City Rebels, on the other hand, were an entirely different ball of wax, with a more familiar Class of ’77 sound and general dumbassitude to which my ears tend to soften—not to mention the awesome pose of the bass player on the front cover.  I really dig that switchblade action—all bands should have at least one dude posing like that!  Like The Bizarros, Rubber City Rebels went on to put out a major label release, substituting another guitar for keyboards, and is actually quite good and worth tracking down.

Charlie Burton And Rock Therapy – “Rock & Roll Behavior / That Boy & My Girl” 7″ (1977)

Undoubtedly the toast of Lincoln, Nebraska, Charlie Burton went on to put out several records over the years.  This was his first and, despite it’s release in 1977, isn’t quite Punk, but it’s close and reminds me somewhat of Rokker.  As usual, I had no idea what this thing was when I found it, but I was intrigued by the cover art and, at first, I thought it was a bunch of dudes pretending to be drunk, throwing up in five gallon buckets.  However, upon closer inspection, I realized they were actually pretending to huff industrial-sized containers of glue, instantly raising this thing a notch or two in my grading criteria.  Based on the autographed cover, some guy named “Fred” didn’t get his world rocked by this thing, seeing as I found it in a junk pile, but I think it’s OK.  The A-side certainly rocks in a bonehead, head-bopping way to which I am highly impartial, and the flip is decent blues / rockabilly-influenced hard rock.  I haven’t heard all their stuff, but it seems like all their material was respectable power poop or hard rock.

Prophet Of Hate – “Death Can’t Wait For You To Die” Cassette (198?, 199?)

This is another one of those recordings that sounds a lot better now than when it came out—whenever that was.  I can’t find out a thing about these guys (guy?) other than they (he?) hailed from the mean streets of Glendale, AZ.  Well, whoever was behind this project, they sure did hate a lot—they even went so far as to spell it out all over the back cover of the cassette.  And, throughout the songs, you can really tell these guys are busting their asses to sound all scary and hateful—it’s just too darn bad that it’s rendered completely impotent by the inherently retarded bounciness and bopiness of the music!  Only three songs and one instrumental on this goofy Goth / Synth / Punk mess and it’s over all too fast.  Fun stuff.

The Ohms – “Teenage Alcoholic / Chain Letter” 7″ (1979)

I don’t know what I was smoking when I got it in my head to toss this in the reject pile.  Well, maybe I do.  At any rate, I fished it out a few weeks ago and the Poopy thumb is now directed in the upward position for “Teenage Alcoholic” and the flip ain’t too shabby, either.  Perhaps, it was because these guys look like a bunch of Wavers and Power Poopers that made Mr. Poopy such a Negative Nellie, but all is forgiven now.  Supposedly, this record is hard to find but you couldn’t prove it by me, although Syracuse, NY isn’t exactly a Mecca for rockin’ pop bands—or anything else for that matter!

The Tinglers – “White Boots In The Night” 7″ (1983)

I really do like the song “White Boots In The Night”, although sharing that fact with the general public is like airing my dirty laundry.  For all intents and purposes, I should hate this thing, as this band is clearly aiming to please and the song’s catchiness appeals to the lowest common denominator of mindless pop sensibilities.  But this song is so cheesy, druggy and 80’s-sounding, I just can’t help myself and the entire 2:05 minutes of this would-be Top 40 hit are so insidiously catchy it just sticks in your brain and won’t get out until you play it from start to finish two or three times—and I hate myself every time I do it!  Too bad it came out in 1983, as it would have been a hit if it had come out a couple years earlier.

Some copies had a great, cheesy picture sleeve, but I don’t have it—but it’s not from lack of trying.  If someone could scan me the sleeve and upload it, I’ll be your imaginary friend.  Oh, yeah, the flipside?  Meh.  It’s listenable and doesn’t totally suck.

The Torpedos were a bunch of sausage-eaters from Chicago, IL.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is the managed to crank out a couple decent Punk records.   This band had more of an early 80’s West Coast sound to them and played some great, gritty, boppin’ Punk that we all love, coupled with the kind of dumbass, obnoxious lyrics that Mr. Poopy loves.  Can’t say much more about these guys ‘cuz I really don’t know squat about them and I’d left old Chi-Town in the dust by the time I got around to listening to this record.  Not that I’m one to offer much of an endorsement, but if you’ve grown tired of some of the old Punk standards being offered elsewhere, and hunger for some old-school Punk that you haven’t heard before, I would suggest this LP, as it contains several Punk ragers that seem to have been lost in the winds of time.  Also, it’s pretty unlikely that too many copies of this made it out of the Chicagoland region, as these guys strike me as a bunch of righteous fuck-ups who probably didn’t give a fuck.

The Torpedos – “Blow Me Or Die” LP (1987)

This is the only other Torpedos LP that I know of and, while it’s not quite as great as the first one, it’s still some fine Punk rockin’ stuff that is at least as good as the tasteful album title and contains the best cover of “Proud Mary” you will ever hear in your life.  According to the liner notes, all but two songs on the LP were recorded live, in the studio, in July ‘86, which is exactly how a band like this should be recorded.  A pretty solid slab of Punk shit for the most part that, at times, sounds a little like Fang.  I’m honestly surprised that, with all of the bottom-of-the-barrel Punk scrapings that have been foisted on a gullible pack of record geeks over the years, no one bothered to dredge up this band.  The Torpedos were a good scumbag Punk band and deserve some glory.

Cardiac Kidz – “Playground” 7″ EP (1979)

cardiac1

Better known for their “Get Out” 7” that showed up on one of those Killed By Death comps and a blog or two, this is the second Cardiac Kidz 7” that you never seem to hear about.  Why?  Who knows?  It’s classic Class of ’77 stuff, recorded live, although it could just as well have been in the studio because the sound is pretty good.  Seminal Punk with a mustache that everybody likes (or should).

The Depressions – “S/T” LP (1978)

depressions

Here’s one of those bands that wound up suffering the label of “fake” for some reason. They seem to have a bit of a Pub Rock feel to them, but I am inclined to think they were the real deal.  Of course, I wasn’t there and I could care less, as there are some good Class of ’77 rockers on this thing and the lyrics on some of their songs more than meet my standards for excellence.  The eye patch was certainly an underrated Punk accessory; perhaps if the other band members sported a wooden leg and a hook for a hand, these guys would have gotten somewhere.

The Feederz – Live 1981

Feederz

Here is some more old Feederz stuff; a show taped on 7/21/81 that I obtained somehow.  Actually, the sound quality on this is almost better than the demo I posted earlier so, if you liked that, this won’t disappoint.  Also, like the demo, it contains a couple songs that never got officially released, along with a couple songs that later wound up seeing the light of day on their last LP.  Not sure what Frank’s fixation with dead animals was—he seemed to use them in his act quite a bit and later went on to become a Santeria high priest, a religious sect criticized for animal sacrifice.  For those out there who are hell bent on rehashing Punk Rock and beating it further into the ground, take a lesson from old Frank Discussion—this is how an old school Punk freak is supposed to act: ugly, crude, and scaring away the chicks! A total of 21 songs on this one.

Feederz – 1979 Demo (Cassette)

feederz

One of the few good things that came out of a recent move was that it gave me a chance to go through some of the crap that had been festering in my collection over the years, which included finding a few forgotten treasures, such as this old Feederz demo that I had a guy rip from the original cassette.  The sound quality is about what you’d expect from 1979, but I’ve heard worse and it does little to hamper the pleasure of hearing a youthful-sounding Frank Discussion belting out songs from the first LP and 7”.  Better still is the fact that it contained several songs that never made it onto any of their official recordings and they are all pretty good tunes, done in the style of the first 7″.  Frank Discussion is a man after my own heart and his misanthropy, anti-establishment stance, and complete lack of tact should have been a model for all Punkers to follow, but they wound up enjoying relative obscurity instead.  This is essential listening for anyone who ever dug this band.

Chainsaw – “Polaride Pictures” 7″ (1978)

chainsaw

Well, here’s another fine slice of moron Punk for you, dredged from the $0.99 cent bin to my turntable to you.  Actually, I was pretty stoked to find this one about a year ago, as the criminally out-of-print “We Are Not Very Nice” CD that came out back in 2001 has been one of my picks for the decade.  This is another one of those bands that people would have written off as “fake” back in the day, with the lead singer and guitar player getting their start in the glitter band Christopher Milk prior to starting this project.  However, like many “fake” bands from that era, the results are far more amusing in 2009 than many of their contemporaries.  Were these guys trying too hard?  Hell, no!  They were busting their asses—but to no avail!  While older guys were obviously writing these songs, the lyrics sound like they were written by a 13 year-old kid, and that works for me quite nicely, thank you very much.  All songs should be this good, bitching about those annoying popular kids with perfect teeth and all.  Would it be mean of me to suggest that this band may not have been the sharpest tools in the shed?  Perhaps, but you can tell they were really trying their hardest to be bad-ass Punks and every one of these songs is completely hilarious and retarded.  The tracks from the original 7” are below and I graciously offer you the CD for download, complete with fake “live” recordings that sound like they dubbed the applause from a baseball game at Yankee Stadium and broken glass sound effects for an audience.  Another criminally underrated masterpiece that deserved more love from an audience with a sense of humor.

Puke, Spit And Guts – “Eat Hot Lead” LP (1980)

pukefront

Well, Mr. Poopy needs to take a leave of absence, so I’ll leave you with one of the greatest Punk albums ever made. Granted this LP is a little corny in parts but what they lack in tact, they make up for in sheer attitude. Taken in context, it’s easy to see why this bunch of bikers trying to jump on the bandwagon didn’t earn their proper place in history with the rest of the Punkers of their day but, when viewed from the perspective of a listener in 2009, they rank as one of the best. In short, this is offensive crap done for the sheer pleasure of producing offensive crap with no redeeming social value—and this is the way it should be! While they appear to be somewhat dolled up on the LP cover, it is safe to say that these guys were complete degenerates and I mean that in the most complimentary fashion possible, as it really shines through in these tunes. And, if the tunes don’t earn the LP’s place as a masterpiece, get a load of the cover art!

I’m not the first person to write about these guys and, according to some Punk historian (Henry Rollins?), bass player Dick Head tried to beat the shit out of Ian MacKaye after he blew his bass amp when the Teen Idles opened for them at a Mentors gig in California. I stare at the picture of Mr. Head and envision him chasing Ian MacKaye around the parking lot. Too bad he didn’t catch him—and kill him!

The Victims – “Real Wild Child” LP (1979)

victims

OK, so I’m not going to argue that this LP is better than the EP that people are now paying hundreds of dollars for.  It isn’t.  However, it isn’t exactly chopped liver by any means and it amazes me that I still find this record gathering dust for as little as $1.99.  What the hell is wrong with people?  Although this band seems to be rooted in The Dolls, they manage to toss up some great Class of ’77 rockers on this one and, as a whole, the record is pretty solid, insofar as none of the songs suck.  Perhaps, my fondness for this LP stems from the general testosterone overload and sexual frustration that comes across here and, with the exception of “Victims Theme”, most every song revolves around chicks.  Seriously, kids, next time you see this one lying around, snag it—it’s worth it!

Suspect Device – S/T 7″ (1982)

Suspect Device

Decent KBD-style Punk Rock out of Brookpark, Ohio—a town where it’s tough to find a stage without a pole in the middle of it!  Although, this came out during the Golden Age of Hardcore, it sounds like late 70’s Punk and, while they took their name from a Stiff Little Fingers song, they don’t sound like them.  But they don’t like “radio handcuffs”, so it’s all good.
