GG Allin – “Sickest Of The Sick” 10″ EP (1993)

ggcover

Well, it appears as if MediaFire is circling the wagons around my steadily dwindling account, giving me “strikes”, despite the fact that I have been deleting all the allegedly “copyrighted” files as they get blocked.  Or is “It Came From The Pit” suddenly a hot tamale after being out of print for over 25 years?  I’ve watched other bloggers get their accounts shut off and it seems like when MediaFire has a problem with you for whatever reason, they just start coming down on your ass for nothing and pull the plug.  Well, just get it over with, cocksuckers—as if I gave a fuck.  It also seems as though I pretty much blew the month of January for blog posts.  Oh, well.  It ain’t about quantity, but quality, right?

So we’ll start the ball rolling with an artist with whom we should all be familiar.  Found this at a record show last weekend and, while I knew this wouldn’t exactly be his best material, I threw down $18.00 on the thing, knowing that I would probably never run across it again.  My loss is your gain!  And is anyone talking about how this year will mark 20 years since this guy kicked the bucket?  Yep, time flies, and the ole Punk Rock mobile keeps sputtering along on empty.  Back when the man was still around, one of the favorite things Punkers used to like to ninny and fuss about, aside from the critical debate of whether or not it was OK to listen to Skrewdriver records, was whether or not GG was an “act” or, better still, proclaim that he was “unoriginal”, as if either of those lame arguments had anything to do with the fact that the guy was thoroughly entertaining and funny as hell.  Having outlived this individual by several years now, I suppose I can make the claim that he is nowhere near as mysterious now as he seemed to me in my teens and twenties.  He wasn’t entirely stupid and I think what trumps all arguments put forth by the ninnies and naysayers was that he did, in fact, make a conscious decision to spend what he had for all it was worth and, while the way in which he chose to do it may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, it was a choice to live in the moment, in real time, for himself.  Or perhaps he should have just kept his job as a janitor?  Nope.  GG passed up the carrot and grabbed the stick for all it was worth.  It’s always annoying when one of your favorite performers kicks the bucket, but I think many in the ranks of the anti-social related to this man and felt a real kick in the gut when he passed on.  I was bummed for months.

Anyway, this is far from his best record, limited to 1,000 copies and appears to have been put out while he was still among the living.  Or maybe not?  No mention of his death on the thing, although it’s the same year.  The “A” side, finds him being his usual, carefree, chipper self, ranting and rattling off some poetry I remember reading in some zines back in the late 80’s or early 90’s.  The “B” side has two short interviews, one of which sounds like it is at the wrong pitch, and a good live version of “Dog Shit”, that was nice to hear after all these years although, sadly, he left out the line, “shit right out of a fucking dog’s asshole”, which is the best part of the song.  That little extra bit of clarification goes a long way with me!

Surgeon General – “Death Sucks But At Least It’s Biodegradable” 7″ EP (1993)

sgfront

Boy, do I regret not having bought more of the Headache stuff when it was around.  What was I thinking?  I suppose I just didn’t see the value of this stuff at the time and with limited funds and important staples like booze and dope to provide, a guy couldn’t be expected to buy every record that struck his fancy, now could he?  Certainly not, although I wish I had all of these things now.

So this is another one of those records that you can skip the reviews and simply look at the band pic on the back to know what you are getting into.  Maybe these guys even shared the stage with Knightmare?  Who knows?  Anyway, it sounds like it looks and, yes, that’s a good thing.

Anyone else out there running into this stuff from MediaFire?  One of my readers brought this to my attention and then I started running across it on other sites.  Here we go again.  It would be one thing if they were actually showing concern for the artists, but instead they are just trying to rope you into giving money to Amazon or iTunes.  Nevah!  You think White Flag is getting money from Amazon for their out of print CD? And they don’t offer the LP for download, either.  If you run into this crap on my site, leave a note in the comments and I’ll try to fix it.

The Great Australian Fuckwit EP – “V/A” CD (1999)

It’s not big secret to me, at least, that the PC Police does, in fact, monitor this site for whatever reason.  I’ll assume it’s because they like it, right?  And here I thought I was holding back the dogs.  Hell, I know I am!  I spent well over a couple of decades around you clowns and if you want to pretend that I don’t have your number, that’s just fine and dandy.  Your rhetoric bears no weight.  So, with that in mind, let’s unleash some mindless garbage of no apparent musical or social value to celebrate our noble crusade for free speech!

Obviously, the bands on this recording are from Australia and, obviously, the dingoes ate their babies, prompting them to record this piece of ridiculousness.  The lyrics are pretty funny, too, and I did a high-res scan so you can all sing along.  The Blurters and Rupture should be known by most, although this is the only thing I’ve ever heard by Stanley Knife.  I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to bands that attempt this sort of schlock, but this one always worked for me for some reason, although I had totally forgotten about it until someone gave me some Rupture a few weeks ago.  Pretty decent for something less than 25 years old!

Back In Business!

All the old posts have now been switched over to MediaFire and the site is, once again, fully functional.  Let’s see how long this lasts, shall we?  I have to admit my confidence in MediaFire could be a little higher, but I’ll give them a chance.  And am I the only one who has trouble with their multi-uploader?  It rarely works and you have to upload one file at a time, hovering over the site until it goes through.  To compound the problem, the nearest high speed internet connection I have is a gas station on the edge of the nearest town with minimal heat and stinks of fried pork tenderloin and potato wedges.  So here I am, stinking of pork tenderloins and potato wedges, and what the hell have you clowns done for me?  Nuthin’!

Oh, and I did some long-overdue site maintenance while I was waiting and stinking.  Basically, I added some new categories to aid in site navigation.  Now, you can get all the Mentors and El Duce posts at the click of a mouse and I did the same with a couple other bands and genres.  I have also received a couple requests in the past to put together a list of some of the top retard and fake Punk releases.  Well, I’m not sure if I can really comply with such a request but, as far as this site goes, I added the categories of Poopy Punk and Poopy Rock that, while containing some legitimate releases, tends to gravitate more towards the bands and artists who went the extra mile in general dumbassitude and crapola.  Not that most of this stuff isn’t stupid, mind you!  I have some new posts in the works and should have them up by then end of the week.

Sockeye / That Cheezy Sensation – “Split EP” (198?, 199?)

I’ll assume most folks have heard of Sockeye.  Sometimes funny, sometimes annoying, sometimes unlistenable but generally amusing, these guys put out a slew of stuff over the years of varying degrees of retardation.  While, I can’t claim to be a die-hard fan, I have to give the Devil his due on this one, because the four Sockeye tracks on this split are funny as shit.  So funny, in fact, I feel a need to post three of them for general consumption.  Not sure if there was ever a Sockeye sleeve, as this record was found by a friend of mine about 19 years ago when he was moving into a new place and wound up in my possession due to his lack of a turntable.  As for the other band, That Cheezy Sensation, it’s pretty decent jokey hardcore / Punk and worth a listen, actually a major cut above most bands that attempt that shtick, really.

Infection – “Legal Limit” LP (1990? 1989?)

I seem to remember buying this around 1990 or so, so I’m guessing it came out around that time.  For whatever reason, it was rumored that these guys were a “violent” band and there were problems at their shows, so I picked this up hoping for a thugfest but, instead, got an earful of Metal / HC in the Straight Edge vein that I was good and sick of at that point in time, although this was not a Straight Edge band.  Twenty years later, I can say that this sounds a heck of a lot better to my ears.  The playing is decent (although it doesn’t hurt to take your palm off the strings once in a while) and the lyrics are actually a cut above and somewhat thoughtful in places.  Pretty generic for the most part, but it has its charm and appears to be mostly forgotten for some reason or other.  I can’t say as I can list too many other bands from Delaware, either.  Lemme see, Nordic Thunder, Stormwatch…..ummmm….. I’m thinking……..

Bloody Mess and the Skabs – “Hung Over And Stoned” CD (1994)

It appears some of you folks liked that first Bloody Mess and the Skabs LP.  Well, there’s no shame in that, as ‘tis a fine record, indeed.  I bought this on tape when it came out because I couldn’t find it on LP and 17 years later it finally dawns on me that this may have never been released on LP, seeing as I’ve never seen it.  So finally I broke down and got it on CD and now you shmoes can reap the benefits.  While not quite as great as the first one, there are still some good songs on here, the best of which would be “Cheerleader For Death”, although my personal fave would be “Born To Win (Live To Lose)”, a rant that serves to describe the perpetual state of mind I was enjoying when I first listened to these tunes.   Sadly, the band pretty much broke up around the time this was released, but Bloody Mess has continued to play in various bands over the years for, like he says in the interview at the end of the CD, “We’re like a thorn—we won’t go away!”

Poopy Bad Bar Band And Lousy Punk Record Fest Part 1: Throbbing Masses – “The Way We Were” 7″ (19??)

Does anyone else out there get burned out on music?  As I shovel down my breakfast in the morning before racing out the door, I look at a wall full of records and it dawns on me how rarely I spin them and how little I care.  A phase, perhaps, but I cannot tell a lie, as none of my records are really rocking my world right now, although I’ve been downloading some great stuff.  At any rate, seeing as I have a blog to run and I’m completely uninspired, I figure I might as well tap into some records I have been on a fence with or flat out don’t like at all, but figure I might as well share them due to obscurity—and the chance to be a dick and make snide comments!  Ha!

I remember a while back reading a comment on some other site where some guy goes, “That’s a bunch of bar band crap—you should get the guy from Glorify The Turd to do it!”  Ouch!  Owwwwwwwwch!  Words hurt, buddy!!  So you think some of this stuff is bad, do you?  Well, stick tight, ‘cuz you ain’t heard nothin’, yet!  Honestly, I wish I had about a thousand of these records from the old days so I could have a blog called “It Was From 1978 And It Sucked Balls”.  Or something like that.

So let us begin this sordid series with Throbbing Masses.  I’ve never heard of them, there’s no date on the record, and there’s nothing on the web.  It does, however, have that late 70’s New York City Art Rock stink to it, so that would have to be my guess, although it could have just as easily come out in the 80’s or 90’s.  The A-Side is a cover song of origins I won’t bother to look up because I don’t care—I’m sure you’ve heard it.  The flip is a total waste of studio time and vinyl.  I mean I’m all about the novelty records, but this isn’t really a novelty record by my definition and, instead of using the track to showcase their dubious “talents”, the guys decide to fill it with nonsense that any jerk could have come up with in his sleep.   The tracks are below.  Enjoy!

Poopy Bad Bar Band And Lousy Punk Record Fest Part 3: Total Passover – “Shalom Motherfucker” 7″ (1991)

I assume the band’s name refers to the Jewish Holiday but it is, in fact, what I should have done instead of pulling it out spending money on this thing!  On the other hand, this is a fairly odd record, and I have a hard time trying to fathom what these guys were about.  Let’s see, does Jewish, Confederate, homosexual, Kosher, Grunge sum it up?  The A-Side has that up-down crescendo thing that a lot of Alternative bands were doing in the early 90’s, no thanks to Nirvana.  Too bad I always hated that sound! They do, however, make ample use of the word “penis”, and that almost saves the song!  The flip is more Punk-sounding and a little better, but nothing to rave about.  All and all, this whole thing is kind of confusing but they were from Iowa, so perhaps it was something in the potatoes.  Oh, wait, that’s Idaho!

Bloody Mess & The Scabs – “6th Grade Field Trip” LP (1990)

OK, I lied and I’m done with the crapola records for now.  Here’s one good record I keep meaning to give a shout out to, as I feel it never quite got the credit it deserved.  As most of us remember, this band was affiliated with GG Allin and, as a result, I think a lot of people wrote them off as GG clones or hangers-on.  Well, that may or may not be true, as I can’t say as I’m all that intimate with what transpired in that scene.  I will attest, however, that their live shows blew most bands out of the water and, musically speaking, this record is about as gritty as it gets, with a crude but catchy US Punk sound that was nothing like the GG Allin material.  Lyrically, there is no comparison to Mr. Allin, either, and I have to say Mr. Mess really shines on a few of these songs, with the type of blunt, honest tirades and commentary that any true Punker can relate to.  “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Mammogram Days”, and “Quicksand” are some of the standouts but, as a whole, the record comes off as very honest, delivered with a Sam Kinison howl!  Really good Punk rock schlock all the way around on this one and I suspect that if he hadn’t been involved with GG, more people would be putting this LP on a pedestal.  The second LP contains several good songs, as well, and is worth a listen.

El Duce – “Booze and Broads” Cassette (1992)

This is another one of those tapes The Mentors put out on their own dime and I actually hadn’t planned on posting this originally, as I figured someone would put this stuff on CD or something by now, for it is of much better sound quality than the later tapes I posted earlier.  As a stallion must be free to roam, so too must the musical genius be free to express himself to his full potential and here we find The Master and Dr. Scum experimenting with a couple musical styles that didn’t make their way to any of the official Mentors records for some unfathomable reason.  There is a little bit of acoustical guitar present on some tracks and they even take a stab at a soft rock-styled love ballad on “Sneak Away From Yer Man” and, indeed, it’s a touching little ditty that should serve as great background music for those intimate moments alone with that special someone.  Fans of more traditional Mentors fare might give “Punishment Time” the vote for top pick on this one, but my personal fave would have to be “I Wanna Ball Yer Daughter” for reasons I don’t care to discuss, other than acknowledging that it has to be one of the most ridiculous, perverted and generally rotten expressions of wishful thinking the man ever laid down.  Truly one of his best!

El Duce and Dr. Heathen Scum – “Lock Up Yer Daughters” Cassette (1996)

This is another one of those later Mentors recordings that got put out on the band’s own label and, like the rest of their material, this is little more than pure musical steel, forged by Thor’s mighty hammer, and sent down to earth as a gift from The Gods.  This was one of the last things El Duce ever recorded, prior to being brutally slaughtered in his quest for forty-ouncers and sandwiches and, indeed, he really sounds like he has one foot in the grave on this one, slurring his words, drunkenly barking, occasionally forgetting what the song is about and drifting off the subject matter (you can hear Dr. Scum shouting reminders in the background), and mumbling incoherently from time to time.  As far as production goes, Bill Metoyer and Brian Slagel are a million miles away on this puppy, but poor sound quality does little to tarnish El Duce’s lyrical genius, expanding his song-writing repertoire to cover such essential topics as women in the workforce (“Why Should I Work When You Do”), monogamy (“Back To The Same Old Hole”), and a touching tale of interracial romance (“Soul Fire”).  And, of course, “Gold Diggin’ Maggot” is a fine piece of fatherly advice that should be passed down from father to son throughout the ages.

Pity the fool who can’t see the tragedy and hilarity of the original Mentors.  These guys were a class act all around and they simply don’t make ‘em like El Duce anymore.  In a world filled to the brim with alcoholics, the man was a DRUNK.

El Duce / Dr. Scum – “Musical Pornography” CD (1993)

Musical Pornography

Well, it’s been a few weeks, but I appear to be back in the saddle, so we’ll get the ball rolling again with another one of my personal faves.  I have been a die-hard Mentors fan since I was a kid and, no matter what musical phase I might have been going through, I always had a special place in my heart for this band.  Understand that there is a certain point where “fandom” transcends just a love for the music itself, but crosses over into a fanatical appreciation of the musicians themselves—this is how I feel about The Mentors.  Granted, just about everything these guys ever wrote was about the same basic subject matter, but that is irrelevant—it is what these individuals stood for and the lives they lead that gives meaning to this music and El Duce did, indeed, live the life.  I really miss that guy, but the new Mentors are still pretty good.  Honestly, you can barely tell the difference with the hoods on, but I long for the good old days with El Duce on drums and vocals.

So I’m not going to argue that this is the best Mentors album ever made.  Some folks would argue that they peaked with “You Axed For It” and “Up The Dose”, but I couldn’t disagree more.  Personally, I think their later self-released recordings such as “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” and “Lock Up Yer Daughters” are some of their best stuff, as it catches the band in a more relaxed mode where they are just tossing ideas around.  These recordings definitely reflect what was going on during those later years, shortly before El Duce’s death, but I think they were in rare form on this one, despite the regrettable absence of Sickie Wifebeater.  El Duce was the most gifted dirty limerick writer to ever walk the face of the earth and, while I suspect he kind of half-made up the words to some of these songs as he went along, he really outdid himself on this one.  It truly is some of his finest work and he manages to stay only about half drunk off his ass throughout the recordings, barking, grunting, crooning and moaning music that is truly that of The Gods.  Musically, it’s your typical Mentors stuff, with thin production, but this album really works for me insofar as it serves to capture the true ESSENCE of the band, by which I mean a bunch of old drunks singing about being rock stars, denying back stage passes to stuck-up chicks, and being indecisive about which groupie to fuck.  Every song on this CD is a masterpiece—every one of them is memorable.  Not that there is such a thing as a “bad” Mentors song.  Everything these individuals created was brilliant!

Many is the time that these songs found their way into my truck’s CD player only to stay in there for days and sometimes weeks, playing over and over again.  I’m not joking.

Pecker Tracks – “Pissy Cop Therapy” 7″ (1993)

Pecker Tracks

This band out of Muskegon, MI smacks quite a bit of the ole Jap-Core, a sub-genre of which I am not much of a fan.  Regardless, this Depression Records release (#13) has grown on me over the years.  This is some hard, fast, obnoxious, pissed-off shit, cranked out by a three-piece outfit.  Tried to find out more about these guys, but all I can determine is that they were gigging around the time of the release.  Six raging tunes on this thing.
