The Ohms – “Teenage Alcoholic / Chain Letter” 7″ (1979)

I don’t know what I was smoking when I got it in my head to toss this in the reject pile. Well, maybe I do. At any rate, I fished it out a few weeks ago and the Poopy thumb is now directed in the upward position for “Teenage Alcoholic” and the flip ain’t too shabby, either. Perhaps, it was because these guys look like a bunch of Wavers and Power Poopers that made Mr. Poopy such a Negative Nellie, but all is forgiven now. Supposedly, this record is hard to find but you couldn’t prove it by me, although Syracuse, NY isn’t exactly a Mecca for rockin’ pop bands—or anything else for that matter!

The Tinglers – “White Boots In The Night” 7″ (1983)

I really do like the song “White Boots In The Night”, although sharing that fact with the general public is like airing my dirty laundry. For all intents and purposes, I should hate this thing, as this band is clearly aiming to please and the song’s catchiness appeals to the lowest common denominator of mindless pop sensibilities. But this song is so cheesy, druggy and 80’s-sounding, I just can’t help myself and the entire 2:05 minutes of this would-be Top 40 hit are so insidiously catchy it just sticks in your brain and won’t get out until you play it from start to finish two or three times—and I hate myself every time I do it! Too bad it came out in 1983, as it would have been a hit if it had come out a couple years earlier.
Some copies had a great, cheesy picture sleeve, but I don’t have it—but it’s not from lack of trying. If someone could scan me the sleeve and upload it, I’ll be your imaginary friend. Oh, yeah, the flipside? Meh. It’s listenable and doesn’t totally suck.

The Bucks – “S/T” 7″ (1980)

Well, let’s just forget about the A-Side, “Avoid The Barracuda”. It’s not entirely horrible but, after many years, it’s just now starting to grow on me a little. The B-Side, “That Kind Of OhOhOh”, on the other hand, is great and, apparently, I’m not the only guy who feels that way, as it made it’s way onto one of those Killed By Death LPs. Not your typical buzzsaw, 3-chord stuff here, but it has that kind of crazy sound, coupled with a thick Swedish Chef / Horgen Bjorgen accent, that would have made some square wrinkle their brow if they heard it back in the day or even now for that matter! I suspect folks across the Pond have a different take on this band, but this was a rarity in the States, so I listen to it with virgin ears, although I could take a wild guess as to the gender of their groupies. Granted, the song sounds dated as Hell, but it still sounds fresh every time I play it for some reason—the musical equivalent of time travel.

The Most – “Take A Chance” 7″ (1979)

Other than sharing a label with The Ohms and also hailing from Syracuse, NY, I have no real information on this band, other than I sort of remember hearing that they were one of the mainstays of the Western New York “scene” back in the day. Or maybe not. I’d probably have to file this one under the category of buried records that deserve to stay buried and the degree of entertainment it brings you probably correlates directly with the mood for nostalgia you’re in. But, hey, it’s an obscure piece of Power Poop from 1979—I never promised you a rose garden and the corny lyrics and girly vocals have some charm.

Red Simpson – “The Man Behind The Badge” LP (1966)

Country music has always been music for the working man, with the result that there have been a few sub-genres such as “Trucker Country” and “Logger Country” that were crafted to cater to more specific groups of working people. But “Cop Country”? Nice try, guys, but no cigar, but it’s not like this LP isn’t thoroughly entertaining. I really can’t believe no Punk bands ever covered any of the songs on this record. Could it get any more easy? I don’t think so. For, you see, many of the songs on this LP possess the unique quality of using the same lyrics one could use in sarcasm as one would use in seriousness. What the Hell am I talking about? Listen to the lyrics of “The Highway Patrol” or “County Sheriff”! Every song on this LP is great and masterfully written by Red Simpson and other country music pros and I’ve never understood why this hasn’t achieved some sort of cult status, as it really is a great LP although, clearly, the “Cop-Country” genre didn’t exactly catch on. The song “The Highway Patrol” did chart in some parts of the country, however. Both of my copies of this LP are completely beat to shit, yet, this rip sounds strikingly as if it was taken off a CD. Fancy that.

Sudden Death – LP (1982)

So exactly what makes a record a “classic”, again? Beats me. They stuck the “Peace” and “Western Front” comps on CD and to this day I’ve never been able to listen to either of those things from start to finish. Those comps gather dust in the Poopy archives while this one still gets played. This is one of those time-capsule records that really captured the era, giving a nice, close look at grimy Punk Rock in all it’s doped-up glory. All these bands were made up of kids in their teens and early twenties—no old dudes and all the songs on this thing have value with no phony political bullshit. Pity the retro fool who isn’t at least somewhat familiar with this one.
The bands: JFA, Sin 34, Moral Decay, Crankshaft, Sadist Faction, The Sins, The Demented, Redd Cross, Youth Gone Mad, Naughty Women, Dead Youth.

New Toys – “Say It” LP (1982)

And here’s another trip to yesterday’s used bin. Or is it the Rust Belt’s used bin of yesterday? Supposedly, the individuals involved with this band were some of the original Punkers and Wavers from the Buffalo / Western New York area, but I wasn’t there and wouldn’t know one way or the other, although tunes like F.Y.Y.B. may give a hint of more raucous times. However, by the time this record came out, these guys were a bunch of Power Poopers who were aiming to please. Not a bad record, really, and it has a “pearl” or two, but I can only handle this sort of stuff in limited doses as it isn’t exactly my “thing”, if you know what I mean.

Kryon – “Seven Responsibilities Of The New Age” Tape (199?)

I’m pleased to say I can’t claim an intimate familiarity with drugs like coke, crack, meth, smack, etc., but there’s this stuff that would leave the user wandering around town, mumbling to themselves, only vaguely aware of their surroundings, only to eventually collapse in a heap due to exhaustion, often pissing and shitting themselves in the process. I always assumed it was rock, but my guess is the eventual collapse was the result of sleep deprivation from days of non-stop use, rather than the drug itself. So I’m doing my usual digging in a thrift shop in a crummy part of town and one of those zombies walks in, mumbling and acting sketchy, but I’m the only one who seems to notice the guy, as most of the other customers and employees are almost as brain-dead as he is. He disappears from sight for a couple minutes, only to reappear with a pair of like-new brown leather cowboy boots on his feet, with the tags still on them and his pants tucked in. He starts walking down the aisle towards me but it was at this point that his legs gave out from under him and he falls to the ground, bashing his head on the steel clothes rack with blood gushing out of his head all over the floor.
Now, mind you, I’ve seen a lot of people lose their shit, so, in a rare presence of mind, I began watching the clock at the other end of the store and watched as some of the other zombies stepped over his bleeding body like he wasn’t even there for about five minutes, before somebody did something about it. And why didn’t the only white dude for miles, who happened to see the whole thing, run over and attend to his, very likely, HIV-infected ass, you might ask? Geeze, I don’t know, but they don’t call me Mr. Poopy for nothing. At any rate, as the walking dead man finally got to his feet, he grabbed a straw cowboy hat, that just happened to be laying near by, smearing blood all over it with his bloody hands, and jammed it crookedly on top of his bleeding head as he ran out the door with the stolen cowboy boots. And the point of this story is what? Nothing! Except that I went back to my digging and I found this Kryon tape that I am offering in this post and, every time I look at it, I think of that freak in the thrift store.
So what do the folks at Kryon believe? Well, basically, that we are all space aliens, sent here to Earth to inhabit human bodies and increase the Earth’s cosmic vibrations until we get to shed our Earth bodies and travel back to the Mother Planet and live in bliss for all eternity. Makes sense to me.
