Maggot Sandwich – “Suckcesspool” 7″ EP (1985)

I’m sure this has been posted elsewhere, but it wouldn’t be right for me not to show some love for this great band. This is actually their second 7”, the first one featured a different singer and, while it’s an OK record, it never rocked my world as much as this one or the LP. This record was their crowning glory in my opinion and the song “Social Reject” wound up on the “Killed By Florida” compilation LP and, indeed, it is a fine little ditty with hilarious, insightful lyrics. My favorite would have to be “Termination”, though, a nice boppin’ Punker in the vein of early Angry Samoans. Stack these guys up right along Roach Egg Invasion for bands that really capture the small town mid-sized city Punk thing.

Yeah, I suppose I should actually look at the record before I post it–I ripped it a year ago. I looked the band up a year ago and found the singer was in a band with his kid! Too bad Norman Rockwell isn’t around to capture the moment.
This actually came out in 1985, not 1984.
These songs are part of a larger studio session that would have yielded the first Maggot Sandwich LP but original singer Buzz Zerk quit in the middle of the recorded and threatened the band not to use any of “his” songs or he would sue them.
So, what should have been an LP with Buzz singing was pared down to a 7″ with Vik singing. I have a tape of the unreleased tracks from this session, but I promised Vik over 20 years ago that I wouldn’t copy them for someone. Apparently Buzz’s threat of a lawsuit is still somewhat potent.
I do love MS’s first record, the “Dead To My World” 7″ (with Buzz) but it has to be one of the quietest records ever made. You really have to crank it to hear anything.
“Successpool” is a step up and the follow up, 1986′s “Get Off The Stage” LP is band’s hallmark.
Vik still plays music with his son in a band called Immaculate Deception.
